History of The Series
On one day in 1989, 43 infants were inexplicably born to random, unconnected women. The women showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Sir Reginald Hargreeves creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, the family fractures, and the team disbands. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving clan members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. They work together to solve a mystery. The mystery surrounds their father's death. But divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat. The Series is based on a collection of comics and graphic novels. My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way created and wrote the Series. Enlarge this image toggle caption David Lee/Netflix David Lee/Netflix

Why U.A is Different
Like most comic-book adaptations, The Umbrella Academy doesn't attempt to focus too much on the plot. However, the first hour-long episode ends with an action-packed bombastic finale, possibly a nod to the music video for My Chemical Romance's hit song "The B-side," which features a similarly bombastic, high-octane finale.

U.A Season 3:
The work that Gerard Way does on the Series is impressive. His razor-sharp humor and booming, brassy voice make it obvious that he was designed for this type of role, especially in a series that opens with an amusing nod to his back story. (The other actor in the song in the video, Snootie Sunshine, is his character's alias.) However, Way's ability to emote convincingly on screen may be more impressive, considering the bipolar disorder he has managed to hide from most of his fans for years. He displays his debilitating mood swings, from smiles and sparkling eyes to depression and hostility, beautifully onscreen in several eerily dark scenes of the first episode. (Given the show's dramatic tone, though, Way's absence from most of the second episode may have been for strategic reasons, given that his original family was missing in action at this point.)

Issues
There is an issue that creator Steve Blackman. Yep, the same guy behind Fox's future X-Force and Marvel's upcoming Netflix series The Punisher and The Defenders. Way solved by leaning into the absurdity of the very concept of the Umbrella Academy. With its vague and disjointed narrative, the Series takes the ages-old debate about what makes a good comic-book movie. Moreover, therefore, what makes for an entertaining comic-book adaptation — to its logical extreme. Unencumbered by the need to tie together characters and situations in an appealing way. The Umbrella Academy is free to tell stories about a family of super-powered punks. Who is trying to save the world — or not. With Netflix's high ambitions for this genre-bending show.
Discussion
It is perfectly justified that The Umbrella Academy season 3 has such a ludicrous premise. Nevertheless, it does not always quite reach the heights of wit and creativity that its animating concepts deserve. The pilot's biggest problem is the less-than-memorable voice cast. While the supporting cast of Possible Muppet Mom No. 3 (Sharon Leal), Hellboy and Sasquatch New York hacker Irene — and, briefly, transgender teacher and assault survivor Renee Montoya (Jane Levy) — support Way's comic riffs on tropes commonly found in comic books and film. At their best, however, the actors in The Umbrella Academy seem too shy or improv-minded to lean into Way's infectious scatological humor (no small task) or his anti-authoritarian deadpan that almost manages to become infectious.
Last Discussion
At their best, this cast manifests a kind of unhinged warmth that moves the surprisingly dark world of the Umbrella Academy into better viewing. They may be unable to do what they could in other Hollywood productions. But they look at least partially like they could embarrass themselves in a supermarket or talk to children they don't know.
And for that, they're to be commended — along with Netflix, which hasn't hesitated to challenge superhero tropes.
