The Padma Bridge stands on the banks of the Padma with its head held high as the highest achievement in the history of Bangladesh. The Padma Bridge is the name of a dream built over one of the fast-flowing rivers in the world. At present, it is the largest bridge in Bangladesh. The total length of the Padma Bridge is 6.15 km and the width is 18.17 m.
Padma Bridge is considered to be the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh, the steel truss bridge carries a single-track railway on the lower level and a four-lane highway on the upper level of it. The bridge consists of 41 sections, each 150.12 m (492.5 ft) long and 22.5 m (74 ft) wide, with a total length of 6.15 km (3.82 mi) which makes it the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the longest bridge over the river Ganges by both span and the total length, and features the highest pile depth of any bridge in the world at 120 m (390 ft).

Concept of the cross-section construction of the bridge
The bridge has a four-lane road and a single railway at two levels. The Padma Bridge is made up of 41 spans and 42 pillars. To build this bridge, which is the largest in the country, we had to face various difficulties. The speed of the current is much higher where the Padma bridge has been built. Experts also feared that the course of the river would change. After that, the bridge was designed with different plans. The Padma Bridge has been built by going through various stages including budget passage in Parliament.
On September 17, 1997, the Government of Bangladesh proposed a project worth BDT
After that, the Padma Bridge was discussed at different times and the bill was amended and there were different plans at different times. In April 2011, Bangladesh signed a 1.20 billion loan agreement with the World Bank. In the same year, on May 17, 2011, a loan agreement of 415 million was signed with the Government of Bangladesh and on June 8, 2011, ADB was awarded a loan of 615 million. Then on October 10, the World Bank suspended funding for the Padma project, alleging corruption.
On 4 July 2012, a proposal to build a bridge with its own funds was raised in the Parliament of Bangladesh. Then on July 9, 2012, the cabinet of Bangladesh decided to build the bridge with its own funds.
The total cost for the construction of the Padma Bridge was Tk 30,193.39 crore. These costs include building bridge infrastructure, river governance, connecting roads, land acquisition, rehabilitation, the environment, salaries and allowances. According to the agreement of the bridge department with the finance department of Bangladesh, the government gave a loan of Tk 29,793 crore for the construction of the bridge.

The bridge authority will pay it at a 1 percent interest rate within 35 years.
Major Bridge Engineering Corporation of China was hired to build the main bridge. Sinohydro Corporation of China works on river governance. Abdul Monem Limited of Bangladesh was awarded the contract to build two connecting roads and infrastructure. The construction work of Padma Bridge was completed on 23rd June 2022 after various discussions and criticisms. The bridge was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on June 25, 2022, two days after the construction of the bridge was completed. The Padma Bridge connects the rest of the country with 19 districts in the southern part of the country. In a much shorter time than before, people from the southern region will be able to travel to different areas, including Dhaka, by using the Padma Bridge. Bangladesh's GDP is expected to grow by 1.2 percent after the launch of the Padma Bridge.
